Moraine Valley Community College

Center for Sustainability

The proposed Center for Sustainability at Moraine Valley Community College is envisioned to create a resource not only for students, faculty, and staff, but for the community-at-large.  Located adjacent to the college’s Technology Center which houses programs such as HVAC/R, Electronics, and Manufacturing, the proposed center will highlight current sustainable technologies and will also serve as a demonstration site for evolving and emerging sustainable technologies over time.

The facility itself is proposed to be designed to LEED Platinum standards as well as the Living Building Challenge standards.  In order to achieve these standards, a net-zero building will be designed to incorporate the following design strategies:

  • Geothermal Heating and Cooling System
  • Earth Tube Ventilation System
  • Roof-Mounted Photovoltaic Panels
  • Ground-Tracking Photovoltaic Panels
  • Small Wind Turbines
  • Rainwater Collection
  • Vegetative Roofs
  • Rain Gardens
