The existing science lab facility at Joliet Junior College was in need of expansion and modernization to accommodate the growing demand for their science and health careers programs. The design team worked closely with the college’s administration, faculty, and staff to determine space needs, planning options, and concept design approaches.
The new 35,000 sf addition was designed to house (14) new labs and support spaces while existing space was renovated to include (7) labs, classrooms, and support areas. The renovation work upgraded the existing building and its infrastructure through lab reconfigurations, HVAC systems replacement, and new lighting, technology, and audio-visual systems.
The new lab addition connects to the renovated lab space resulting in an integrated departmental configuration. The new addition is also adjacent to a major pedestrian entry point into the campus, and has been designed to serve as a gateway with a new exterior courtyard space. A light-filled, two-story atrium space serves as an extension of the corridor into the building and promotes student and faculty interaction.
