In order to address its growing enrollment for its current Health Science programs as well as to create space to accommodate new programs, Black Hawk College commissioned DKA to design its new Health Sciences Center.
The new facility is positioned on campus in accordance with the Facilities Master Plan, also completed by DKA, along the west side of a ravine that bisects the campus. This unique building site has created an opportunity to “open up” the east face of the building toward the native landscaping. As a result, the design of the building incorporates open student gathering spaces along this edge to maximize views and natural light. Additionally, the north end of the building contains a tiered lecture space which has been created as an architectural anchor for the structure and a beacon from the opposite side of the ravine.
DKA worked closely with the college’s stakeholder groups to develop the building program which includes:
The building has pursused LEED Gold Certification which makes this building the first LEED certified building at either of the Black Hawk College campuses.
